The band was created in 2009 by college mates, Tyler Joseph (lead vocals, ukulele, piano, keytar, synthesizer) and Nick Thomas (bassist) in Columbus, Ohio. The band name ‘Twenty One Pilots’ originated from Tyler who at the time was reading a play called ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller which is about a man who commits suicide after causing death to 21 pilots during WWII by sending damaged parts for the success of his business. Tyler described that the story of moral dilemma was influenced by the band name. On December 29, 2009, the band released their debut album and started touring in Ohio.
